The Shaft Lock grasper
Introducing our most recent R&D project in the surgical instrument field, the safety integrated laparoscopic grasper.
Based on compliant mechanics and designed for surgeons to operate with no hinderance and the peace of mind that unintended forces can be fully managed.
Currently our design is based around two mechanisms that can be integrated into standard laparoscopic graspers, either seperately or both together. Our first patended compliant mechanism is the Shaft-Lock which acts as a mechanical safety that makes sure that forces can not exceed a certain level, while still allowing for full functionality and range of grasping. Our second invention is the Tuneable Static Balancer, that works in tandem with a compliant tool-tip.
Based on research performed at the Technical University of Delft this mechanism improves the mechanical effeciency of the grasper allowing surgeons to fully feel any palpation made with the instrument.
The tuner allows us to get a much higher precision of balancing than prior designs and can even create precise under or over balancing based on the intended use case.
The project is in collaboration with the Technical University of Delft, MediShield B.V. and University Hospital of Iceland. Developement has been underway since 2019 and the project is a recpient of the Rannís Technical Innovation Grant.
In co-operation with our partners the start-up Tulipa Medical B.V. was founded in the Netherlands with the goal of marketing and licensing the products of this project.
